“We have known the BuddhaStiftung and its founders for a long time. They walk with us on the path laid out by Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. Through its work, the BuddhaStiftung is dedicated to the development and dissemination of a secular or enlightened Buddhism. To this end, it supports discourse both between Buddhism and society and among Buddhist traditions. We are happy to be a source of inspiration and actively contribute to the work of the foundation.”

Martine Batchelor

Martine Batchelor was ordained as a Buddhist nun in Korea in 1975. Her Zen training also took her to Taiwan and Japan. After disrobing, she returned to Europe with her husband Stephen in 1985. She was a member of the Sharpham North Community in Devon, engaged in interfaith dialogue, and was a trustee of the International Sacred Literature Trust. She co-founded the “Bodhi College” for secular Buddhism and leads meditation retreats worldwide. Her focus areas include meditation in daily life, Buddhism, and social engagement, particularly concerning women. She has published numerous books and, together with Stephen, is a patron of the BuddhaStiftung.

Stephen Batchelor

Stephen is considered one of the most distinguished critical thinkers in Buddhism and has developed the foundations of a secular Buddhism that is compatible with both the central teachings of the Buddha and a modern worldview. His translations, analysis, and interpretation of the oldest Buddhist texts formed the basis for reconciling the central teachings of the Buddha, the Dharma, with a secular, modern worldview. For many years, he was a Buddhist monk in the Tibetan and Korean Zen traditions. He teaches the practice and ethics of Buddhism in retreats and lectures worldwide, together with his wife Martine Batchelor, with whom he lives in France.
